One line, three figures
Three Graces is made from a single continuous thread of paint. The canvas lies flat on the floor of my studio in Klovborg, and the paint falls from a bottle held above it — no brush, no outline, no correction. The line stretches when I move fast and pools when I hesitate, so every body on the canvas is a record of the speed of my hand. I call it the wrist dance.
Why they have their backs turned
The Three Graces have been painted for five centuries — Botticelli, Raphael, Rubens, Canova — and they almost always face the viewer, arranged to be looked at. These three turned around. They are walking toward the blue, away from us, and whatever they are heading for is not our business. The loose loops and stray threads around them are the paint that fell between deliberate marks. I leave them in.
